The cannabis industry is one of the fastest growing in the world. There is global excitement as new opportunities develop throughout the U.S., Canada, and abroad. In particular, the U.S. cannabis market has seen new states legalize cannabis in recent years, with both therapeutic and medical programs. Momentum from several major developments in 2018, including the inclusion of industrial hemp in the new farm bill and Canada’s nationwide legalization, and FDA approval of the Epilepsy treatment Epidiolex are major factors in the explosive growth of the industry.
However, with the explosive growth in the industry, one major statistic stands out among the rest- Black entrepreneurs account for less than 1% ownership of the total dispensaries currently in the U.S. Many small businesses have been disenfranchised from the beginning. However, there are still many opportunities and Black businesses that are having success in the industry globally.
